Later, I will write a memorial to my dear friend, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, who passed in the night, with her lovely partner Hal at her side. Eve was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991 and has lived with that disease and with the condition of mortality more powerfully, beautifully, and profoundly than anyone I have ever had the privilege to know.

Emory Elliott, My Friend, 1942-2009

Yesterday I learned of the passing of another great spirit in the world, my dear friend Emory Elliott. He is the most generous of mentors, the kindest of human beings, and, like John Hope Franklin, someone who always fought for the good and the right, and maintained hope against odds. The whole profession mourns his passing. He befriended me my first month as an assistant professor, when he had just been tenured at Princeton and he seemed so wise and old. Over many years, we became very close friends. I watched his wonderful children grow up to have their own lives, careers, children. He hired me at Princeton. He was beloved worldwide and represented the best of American Studies worldwide. And I miss him beyond measure.

Grace Paley, Forever

Writer and activist Grace Paley died this week at the age of 84. I had the privilege to meet her a few times over the years, which is to say I was in a room with her, awestruck by such indomitable energy and passion. May she live forever!
