The Digital Media and Learning Competition, in Pictures
Information Superhighway to Nowhere
The Digital Media and Learning Competition that we are running in conjunction with the MacArthur Foundation wraps up tonight. The deadline is 8:00 p.m. EDT, to be exact. In the last two months, we have sent announcements about the competition far and wide, and have been written up everywhere from the Orange County Register to O'Reilly Radar. I even managed to pick up a new webcomic as I researched publicity outlets (that would be Piled Higher and Deeper, which was syndicated on the sites of many graduate student associations.)
But my favorite part of the process has been the images we used to put a face to the competition. I've gathered them all here for a consolidated view:
VR Jessica: Jessica Riley in Duke's Immersive Virtual Environment, photographed by Les Todd
Youtube Jessica: Jessica Figueroa, pulled from the Youtube video she and Dwayne Dixon created in Tokyo for the DML Competition (see the video here)

Second Life Jonathan: The Second Life avatar of one of our summer interns (not me, and not MacArthur President Jonathan Fanton either, though he is on SL), image provided by Brett Walters
The Reception at UC-Berkeley, University of Illinois, and Mills College: Dancers at Berkeley and dancers at UIUC danced "together" in cyberspace in this tele-immersive project (more details here), part of HASTAC's 2006-07 In|Formation Year

Shinjuku girls: A still from Jessica and Dwayne's Youtube video; I loved the "street survey" part of the video where this originated.

And finally ... InfoSpherian: Photograph taken at SPECFLIC 2.0, a Distributed Social Cinema project directed by Adriene Jenik and performed at the San Jose Public Library as part of ISEA06/ZeroOne San Jose; Photographer: Chris O'Neal, Performer: Praba Pilar

Gorgeous! I'm sure that the applications will be as varied and exciting as the projects that brought us these images.
