I've had this blog for almost a year, and finally gave it a title and short description a month ago. So, I guess it's time to explain myself

Alaska Senator Ted Stevens' remarks in a committee hearing on a net neutrality bill didn't go very smoothly, as covered by Wired and a host of other bloggers and tech news outlets. Aside from the large contingent of people making fun of Stevens' comments (I have to admit that "It's not a big truck" is pretty amusing), a lot of people are rightfully horrified that one of the people with the authority to change how telecommunications companies do business has such a poor understanding of the technology. I suspect that Stevens' techno-ignorance is not rare in the Senate. Aside from their very high average age, U.S. Senators often send communiques like the one I've pasted below, an electronic newsletter that I receive from (my home state) New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici's office. It arrives irregularly despite professing to be a "monthly newsletter," the columns are always badly aligned (though it may look like the text is wrapping around the photo, there are actually two text columns there, with no space between), and links to videos often don't work. It seems kind of indicative of the level of commitment to using the internet to serve constituents, doesn't it?

Thus, I decided to name my blog after the much-talked about Bridge to Nowhere in Alaska. If Ted Stevens would be appalled at the ability of the internet to quickly publicize his gaffes, it will only mirror the disbelief that I (and probably many other Americans) have for his legislating something he barely knows how to use.
