I feel as though I am a well educated individual who does an okay job of keeping up with facts and events around the world. However, I was shocked when watching Spike Lee's documentary to see exactly how much information was known about Kartina before it actually hit. I had no idea that everyone was that aware of the possible damage that it would cause. For our government to have their "wait and see" approach in dealing with this hurricance is inexcusable. I'm sure I am not saying anything that hasn't already been said over and over again over the course of the past year, but it was something that really had a profound impact on me.
I will say that it was very enjoyable to watch a major event come back to New Orleans when the football game was there last Monday. It was good to see smiles and laughter and happiness, if only for a night. I feel this tragedy made even more clearer the class and social distinctions that still exist in this country and it was nice to see everyone forget those again, for at least a few hours.
