Last week, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications hosted an excellent one week meeting on High Performance Computing in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences: Information-Rich Environments for Research and Teaching

The event sponsored by the Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences was attended by 35 participants. These included many faculty attending from the University of Illinois and other campuses inlcuding the Universities of Purdue, Texas at Austin, Minnesota, York, the National University, the University of Sheffield and King's College (UK), and the Universidad Nacional (Costa Rica).

The agenda included many topics of relevance to scholars in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences from Text and Image Analytics to advanced scientific vsualization, GIS  and social networks. Dr. Vernon Burton closed the week with a very inspiring presentation on the need for the disapperance of the line between research and teaching. He urged the participants to think of ways of making the advanced technologies being developed at NCSA and elsewhere, accessible in learning environments. Dr Burton also emphasized the need for a shift of focus from teaching to learning.

In a series of posts that start today, I will summarize the wonderful working week we just had at the Universiyt of Urbana Champaign by blogging each day of the week about the agenda for the same week day of last week, when we just had too much to take in and blog about!
