SC08 Newsletter—Issue 3 Third time's a charm! Welcome to Issue #3 of the SC Newsletter. This newsletter offers attendees, exhibitors, mediaand other interested parties useful, up-to-date information about SC08. This month, pay close attention to the May 30, 2008 deadline for submitting your requirements for Wide Area Networking resources.
Sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and ACM, SC08 is the premier international conference on high performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis. This year's conference, to be held from November15-21, 2008 in Austin, Texas at the Austin Convention Center, marks the 20th anniversary of the first SC, then calledSupercomputing, held in Orlando, Florida in 1988. Bringing together scientists, engineers, researchers, educators,programmers, system administrators, and managers, SC08 will be the forum for demonstrating how these developments are driving new ideas, new discoveries and new industries.

Seymour Cray Computer Engineering and Sidney Fernbach Memorial Awards Nominations Now Being Accepted
The prestigious Seymour Cray Computer Engineering and Sidney Fernbach Memorial awards recognizeoutstanding achievement in the field of supercomputing. The Cray award is given to individuals whose innovativecontributions to high performance computing best exemplify the creative spirit of Seymour Cray. The SidneyFernbach Memorial award recognizes innovative uses of high performance computing for the solution of largecomputational problems. Sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, these prestigious honors are presented during special sessions held during the conference.
Nominations are now being accepted. The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2008. The nomination form, and the required endorsements, should be submitted via the IEEE Computer Society website. SCinet Releases Call for Circuits, Deadline for Wide Area Circuit Requirements is May 30, 2008
The Lonestar Education and Research Network (LEARN) and its members in Texas are partnering with SCinetto provide Wide Area Network (WAN) services support for SC08. In order to plan the wide-area and metro resources required to support conference participants, exhibitors and network entities will need to identify their WAN circuitrequirements into the Austin Convention Center by Friday, May 30, 2008. The SC08 WAN team will work with National LambdaRail (NLR), Internet2 and LEARN to implement the requiredcircuits for SC08 from the NLR and Internet2 connection points in Texas to the Austin Convention Center. The following WAN services are planned to be available at the Austin Convention Center: NLR PacketNet, NLRFrameNet, Internet2's IP Network, Internet2's Dynamic Circuit Network, ESnet and commodity Internet. Other wide-area static circuit services may also be made available depending on the requirements. Unless otherwise expressly agreed to by the SC08 WAN team, all wide-area circuits will be terminated at the Austin Convention Center.

* Circuit type and bandwidth requirements
* Carrier or provider
* Circuit start and end points

Call for Xnet Submissions SCinet's Xnet (eXperimental Networks) environment provides a venue to showcase emerging, often pre-commercial orpre-competitive, developmental networking technologies, protocols and experimental networking applications.
SCinet is the floor network and it has evolved into a robust, high-performance, production-quality networkthat exhibitors and attendees depend on for reliable local area and wide area network services. Consequently, it has become increasingly difficult for SCinet to showcase cutting edge, potentially fragile technology. Xnet provides a venue that is by definition cutting-edge, pre-standard and in which fragility is understood and accepted. Xnet enables its participants and research exhibitors an opportunity to showcase emerging, prototype or experimentalnetwork gear or capabilities, prior to their general commercial availability in a fault tolerant (forgiving) environment.
Xnet debuted in Portland, Oregon at SC99, where Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology wasused in the implementation of OC-48 SONET rings on the conference exhibit floor. At SC2000, Xnet demonstratedpre-production and early delivery 10-Gigabit Ethernet equipment connecting several exhibit floor booths. Since then, Xnet has showcased many advanced optical switching technologies as well as international, multi-domain controlplane manipulation and new transport technologies. These have included 16 - 64k pMTU (SuperJumboFrames), 10G Encryption and Remote Direct Memory Access over InfiniBand in 2005 as well as GMPLS control, SensorNetworks and Data Centre o/s migration, and open fabric NFS/RDMA using RDMA over Infiniband in 2006 Xnet participant demonstrations gain special conference-wide visibility at SC with references in event literature,on-site signage, directional signs to pinpoint the locations of the demonstration, and in some instances even include complimentary exhibit space and network connectivity. SC08 Cluster Challenge Call for Participation
The SC08 Cluster Challenge is open for submissions for teams interested in participating in Austin. The challengeis a showcase of cluster computing in the hands of undergraduates. Teams will be selected to compete on a mix ofHPC benchmarks and applications on an architecture of their design live at SC08. Last year's event exceeded allexpectations and we expect an even stronger event this year in Austin. Questions: cluster-challenge@info.supercomputing.org

Help Celebrate SC's 20th Anniversary
The Twentieth Anniversary Initiative Committee is planning a number of activities to highlight the evolution of the conference, supercomputing, and related technologies since the first conference was held in Orlando in 1988. You can help with this exciting activity. A large lobby display will include both physical and digital components. Physical components might include conference memorabilia and historically significant machines loaned by vendors. A digital archive site will beavailable in late spring to upload material such as significant photos, movies, videos, or textual anecdotes. Anecdotes might include a description of how participation in the conference has influenced one's career or a description of an event found to be particularly noteworthy, statistics on the change in SCinet over its lifetime, etc. Previous year's proceedings are available at: http://sc08.supercomputing.org/?pg=history.html. The Committee is interested in volunteers to serve as docents for the exhibit and would also like to build a list ofpeople who have attended all 20 SC conferences. Record Number of Technical Paper Submissions to SC08
The SC08 Technical Program closed on April 14, 2008 with 276 regular papers and and 20 ACM Gordon Bell Prize submissions submitted from around the world. This set a new SC conference record for Technical Paper submissions.
"The reviewers certainly have their work cut out for them," said Technical Program Chair Adolfy Hoisie. "But receiving so many quality submissions is the kind of problem we like to have."
Other areas of the Technical Program also garnered a healthy number of submissions, including 49 Tutorials,16 Workshops, and 13 Panels. Acceptance decisions for all these program elements will be announced inlate June 2008.

SC08 Hotels - New Room Allocation Process for 2008!
SC08 has contracted for more than 4,100 hotel rooms in the Austin area for Exhibitors and Technical Program Attendees this year. The conference has instituted a new allocation process that intends to be more fair and equitable to all attendees. A key component of the new process is reserving half of the rooms at downtown hotels for Technical Program attendees, improving their chances of getting a room close to the convention center. Technical Program Attendee Housing will open August 4, 2008 - At this time a block of 1,565 hotel rooms in the downtown area as well as rooms in hotels outside of the downtown area will be made available to
Technical Program Attendees. SC08 and the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau's Housing Service will use a Web-based housingmanagement and reservation processing system (Passkey) that will open at the same time as Advance SC08Technical Program Registration. Exhibitor Housing opened on April 1, 2008 and Exhibitor Booth Bosses have been notified by email of the new process. (Please note that Exhibitors have been apportioned approximately 1,500 hotel rooms that are in the downtown area as well as additional hotel rooms outside of the downtown area.) Exhibitor Booth Bosses must consolidate their exhibitor lists to coincide with the new process - only one housing request per Exhibitor Booth will be accepted. The hotels that are outside of the downtown area are close to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and only6-8 miles from the Austin Convention Center; all conference hotels that are not in walking distance of the convention center will be served by SC08 shuttle bus service throughout the week of the conference.
