With this being my senior year, I am working on moving into the next stage of my life.  One main aspect of this is job hunting.  As a history major, I am seeing some issues facing me down.  I feel like being in the college of LAS leaves a person at a distinct disadvantage, and I feel like our great University here is partially at fault.

Currently, I live with a Computer Science major, a Civil Engineer, and a Business Administration and Marketing double major.  Seeing the opportunities that exist for my roommates makes me quite jealous to be honest.  They all have their career fairs and things like simplicity to help them in their job search.  The only sort of thing like this that I have been able to find in my years here so far, was a career info night.  It was not a career fair like my roommates look forward to, there were no resumes to be handed out, no companies present, instead it was a very informal night to meet and chat for just a minute or two with someone who may have gone through school with the same major as you.  I ended up talking to someone who went to school as a history major and someone who was also involved with information technology (like myself again, informatics minor), and it seemed like I could learn something from him.  That is until I talked to him and he told me he ended up working at a hospital selling medical supplies then he thanked me for my time and told me to move along.

Now there is the possibility that I have been oblivious to some opportunities that exist for people in LAS, however, I then blame the lack of publicity for my ignorance.  I have been trying to get some help in the job search and I have been actively seeking help or places that could assist in my search, and other than the random semi useful occurances at the Career Center, I have been striking out.

I realize that making a career fair like the one for the College of Business or the Engineering Career fair would be quite difficult for the College of LAS because of the sheer number of widely differing majors in the college, but I feel like there should be a way to get over this roadblock.  Maybe some of the majors could be grouped together, like they are for graduation, and have a few smaller career fairs that focus on certain aspects of the College of LAS.

If anyone is aware of options that I have not mentioned, please feel free to leave them in the comments, it would help myself and I am sure some other people as well.

I wonder if during a parents

I wonder if during a parents weekend or homecoming weekend who it is at your university who organizes such events would consider putting together a fair-type thing tapping in to just those people who are visiting campus. Parents usually have jobs and sometimes they're even really cool and interesting ones. They might work for companies that would be willing to let them be their ambassadors to job-searching students. For homecoming weekend perhaps alumni would be willing to give a couple of hours of their time for a similar thing. These things might too large or just too organizing intensive to be of help to you now, but perhaps if you suggested them to the right people at your university they could be put in motion.

I also read somewhere on the internet yesterday that an amazingly high percentage of businesses use LinkedIn to hire people. Maybe you should set up a LinkedIn account and start friending people who are friends of your friends. Really work that social networking system.

I was an English major and took a fairly crappy temp job straight out of college as a receptionist for Arthur Andersen & Co. About 9 months later it morphed into an actual systems/IT job when the lead partner of the division where I answered phones learned that I'd gone to the same university as him. He figured I was probably pretty smart and was willing to take a chance on giving me a "real" job. Not a glamorous story, and not what "they" tell you is going to happen (go to college and all will automatically fall into place). Really, social networking, digital or f2f, seems to be the most powerful tool we all have.

Good luck!
